In 1986… ON TELEVISION: â The first episode of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" airs. â "The Cosby Show" is the top-rated TV program in the U.S. FOR THE CAUSE: â More than 6 million people hold hands across the nation to participate in Hands Across America, a benefit event for hunger and homelessness. â The first national Martin Luther King Jr. Day is observed. IN THE NEWS: â The space shuttle Challenger explodes 73 seconds after liftoff, killing seven crew members. â The Chernobyl disas- ter, a catastrophic nuclear accident, occurs in the USSR. LIFE & DEATH: â Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are born. â Cary Grant passes away at 82 years old. ON THE RADIO: â "That's What Friends Are For" by Dionne and Friends (Dionne Warwick, Gladys Knight, Elton John, and Stevie Wonder) tops the Billboard Hot 100. â "We Are the World," written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, takes home Song of the Year at the 28th Annual Grammy Awards.
